Where to start

You do not have to start at the beginning. These are the usual starting points and what each one involves.

Why it is the hardest

Not because of distance: because of terrain. The Primitivo crosses the Asturian mountains with continuous climbs and descents, and the Hospitales route runs high, with no villages and no services, exposed to wind and fog for more than twenty kilometres.

That section is exactly the case that explains why on this site the elevation profile carries the places you can stop on top of it. A handsome profile with four hours of nothing in the middle is incomplete information.

There is an alternative via Pola de Allande for bad weather. Knowing it exists, and knowing when to take it, is half the preparation.

Who it is not for

We would rather say it plainly: if this is your first Camino, if you have knee trouble or if you have not trained on hills, this is not the route. Not out of heroic toughness, but because escape options are few and public transport in that area is scarce.

From Lugo you can walk the final section, the bare 100 km without the Hospitales. It is a reasonable way to see it without committing to the mountains. Details here.
