Camino Primitivo stages
Oviedo to Santiago stage by stage, including the decision that shapes the whole route: the Hospitales or Pola de Allande. And the stretches with absolutely nothing, of which this route has several.

Oviedo to the fork

The Hospitales route (or the alternative)

Berducedo to Lugo

Lugo to Santiago

The Hospitales: when yes and when no
It is the most important decision on the whole Primitivo, and it is made in Borres on the morning of the stage.
The Hospitales route climbs to the ridge and stays high for more than twenty kilometres, passing the ruins of three medieval pilgrim hospitals. The scenery is the finest on the whole Spanish network. And it has no village, no reliable spring and no shelter for the entire stretch.
When not to do it: in thick fog, strong wind, a forecast of storms, or if you set off late. There is no intermediate escape: once you are up there, you finish.
The alternative via Pola de Allande is longer with more tarmac, but it passes villages and can be abandoned. Taking it in bad weather is not giving anything up: it is what people who can read a forecast do.
And this is exactly why the elevation profiles on this site carry the places you can stop on top of them. A profile that only says how much you climb does not warn you there is no water for four hours.
The stretches with no services
Besides the Hospitales, there are two more places where you should set off loaded:
- Tineo to Borres. Very little along the way, and Borres is a tiny hamlet: without a booking you can end up without a bed.
- San Román da Retorta to Melide. 28.5 km through inland Galicia with very little in between.
In general the Primitivo has fewer and smaller albergues than the Francés. Even with few people on the route, they fill. In high season booking is close to compulsory.

How many stages does the Camino Primitivo have?
Thirteen or fourteen from Oviedo depending on how you split it. From Lugo, five.
Is the Hospitales route compulsory?
No. The alternative via Pola de Allande is equally valid and is the sensible choice in bad weather.
Which is the hardest stage of the Primitivo?
Borres to Berducedo via the Hospitales, for exposure and lack of services. In physical punishment, the descent to Grandas de Salime.
Can you walk the Primitivo in winter?
The high sections can have snow and fog, and several albergues close. Not a route for winter without mountain experience.
